01Interview with Pete Faragher –  BBCAN Production Designer

What was behind the change in the location of the Big Brother Canada house?
Pete: Studios got sold. We all had to find new homes. That house was never meant to move. It was either like the show is cancelled and it goes into a dumpster, or it stays there. This (new studio) was absolutely the best choice out of what was available. We have taken over this whole studio complex.

What is different about having the house at the new location?
Pete: What’s different? It’s actually a larger house than last year. The backyard is smaller. That’s just cause I couldn’t make it any bigger. I would have if I could have, but the house itself is larger. It’s just shy of 18,000 square feet (compared to 16,000 or 17,000 last season). We have more rooms. We did it once, now we have the chance to make everything better. One of the cameramen came up to me and said “I can’t believe how well this house shoots”. He said “you have figured it out now”.

Was there anything that the change in locations allowed you to do differently or prevented you from doing?
Pete: We would have done this even if we were at the other house. We wanted year one to be pretty conservative. Still cool, but there was nothing really crazy. It’s like “Wow. This looks great. It’s mid-century modern”. If you have watched any of the other Big Brothers, they get a little nuts. I wanted to go a step towards that.
That is sort of our plan, as the years go by, that we want to get a little nuttier. We don’t want to start at “10”. We want to start at a good base and ramp it up as the years go by. This year it’s a little wackier, has a little less to do with what you might have in your own house. Last year’s house, you could look at the kitchen and go “Oh, I want a kitchen like that” or “I want a bedroom like that”. This year it is a little more “Big Brother” and less normal.

What other changes have been made?
Pete: There is additional lightning (throughout the backyard), which helps us during challenges. There are moving lights added this year. We can actually attach graphics to the truss, so each challenge is going to have a whole different fabric, graphics. Many other things too, that we have already got planned, that we can hang on here. The grid (above in the backyard) comes down. So, later in the season, if there was a band that was in the Big Brother house, it would be a rock concert type lighting setup.
