She made it to the final four, but Edmonton’s Heather Decksheimer came up short on Big Brother Canada. On Wednesday, she was evicted after 70 days in the house, just shy of Thursday’s finale. I caught up with the outgoing 23-year-old on Friday morning to talk about her experience on the reality-TV series.
Question: How was being in the house different than what you thought it was going to be?
Answer: I thought that being in the house would be a lot easier. I thought my road would be simpler. But once I got in here, things weren’t what I pictured at all. There were so many people with huge personalities. Everybody kind of clashed. It’s not something I expected. Ultimately, that was the biggest shock to me.
Q: How hard was it being in the house on a day-to-day, basis?
A: Oh my gosh, being in the house is crazy! One day feels like a whole entire week. The hours seem longer. You don’t really have anything to do except the things you come up with to entertain yourself and the other people in the house. We would make up games and strike up fun verbal games. I’m pretty sure we came up with a game where we’d go through the alphabet and you’d have to pick one letter and come up with all the words that started with that letter that we could use inside the house.
Q: How difficult was it being away from friends, family, the Internet, phones, all that?
A: It’s the hardest thing I’ve ever done. In the real world, you have all those things and they mean so much to you, once you don’t have any of them. Now, looking back I am sure I will be able to have much better, time with people without looking at my phone. I will never, ever, ever go that long without talking to any of my loved ones ever again.
Q: Where did your game go wrong?
A: My game definitely went wrong when I evicted Adel instead of Sabrina. It was downhill from there. I had to really fight to stay in it and ultimately I ended up leaving.
Q: Seeing as you were largely alliance-free, are you surprised you lasted as long as you did?
A: I am absolutely surprised I lasted this long. (laughs) After the first couple of weeks, I thought I wouldn’t be here for long. That maybe the next week after I would be gone. Definitely, lasting as long as I did shocked me. It worked out for me in the end. I think that even though I went through a really rough patch in the beginning, I was able to see a lot of people’s true selves. That is something other people didn’t see, they only saw the game selves. So that helped me. It helped me find an alliance that I could have a strong core with. Then Canada turned the whole house upside down (by nominating Andrew and Sabrina) and it let me and the Sloppy Seconds have a chance in the house.
Q: Did you learn anything about yourself during your t0 days in the house?
A: Absolutely. I have learned so, so much. The biggest thing I have learned about myself is that I now have an “I don’t care” attitude. People can say whatever or do whatever, but at the end of the day, I am still me and I still have the people that I love and care about and I don’t care what anybody else says or does. That it just doesn’t matter.
Q: Why did you vote the way you did?
A: Jon is a really, really great guy and he’s someone I was really close to, personally, inside the house. But I strongly believed he played the best game. I think that Sabrina was carried all the way to the end. She had a strong start, but that was it for her game. We kept her around because we didn’t see her as a threat whereas Jon fought to stay in the game. Jon had strong social skills, strong physical skills and that’s why I picked him in the end. I really do believe he was the best person to pick, both game wise and on a personal level.
Q: If Neda was also in the final, how would you have voted?
A: That makes the question a little bit harder. (Laughs) Jon and Ned both played an amazing game. I believe that I might have been swayed to vote more in the direction of Neda, mostly because she played a really strategic game and she helped out Jon a lot. It would have been a very hard decision for me to make. I think (deciding who to vote for) would have been an in-the-moment kind of thing.
Q: And do you have anything to say to the people of Edmonton?
A: I love you, Edmonton, City of Champions! I am so excited to see everyone when I get home. Thank you for watching, Woo!
