It was another crazy year in reality TV. Here are my top five moments:
5. ALL TRIBAL COUNCIL VOTES ARE NULLIFIED FOR THE FIRST TIME IN SURVIVOR
What many Survivor fans called the most jaw-dropping season in the show’s history also welcomed the most confusing and suspenseful tribal councils – one of which made Survivor history by seeing all votes nullified for the first time in 31 seasons. With only six players remaining on Survivor Cambodia: Second Chance, idol wizard Kelley Wentworth and eventual winner Jeremy Collins both played their hidden immunity idols at once, invalidating all the votes that were cast against them. When a new re-vote saw a tie between Tasha Fox and Kimmi Kappenberg, the castaways were then left with the intense dilemma of choosing together who would be send out of the game. Eventually, it was Kimmi, the Australian Outback veteran, who saw her torch snuffed.
4. BIG BROTHER’S FIRST TRANSGENDER HOUSEGUEST MAKES HISTORY
Not too much is predictable about the madness of Big Brother, besides maybe the casting that selects a new batch of houseguests to enter their new summer home. This year, CBS’s summer staple reality show broke new ground by welcoming its first transgender houseguest into the game when BB17 kicked off and Audrey Middleton, the 25-year-old digital media consultant from Georgia, walked through the doors. Right away, the self-described super-fan announced her truth to her new roomies during the season premiere and responses were all very much supportive. It wasn’t until Audrey began to blow up her own game with over-zealous game-moves and sneaky strategy that she became a target for eviction. By week four, the houseguests caught on to the tactical player’s ploys to lie and manipulate in order to get to the end, and she was ousted from the game by a nearly unanimous vote.
3. KAITLYN BRISTOWE TAKES ON HATERS FOLLOWING BACHELORETTE CONTROVERSY
Every year, Bachelor host Chris Harrison dramatically refers to each new season as "the most controversial season ever," but when The Bachelorette aired this spring, he was actually right. Kaitlyn Bristowe, the 29-year-old dance teacher from Vancouver, had been hand-selected as the new Bachelorette by the men she would soon be dating, but it wasn’t long before millions of Bachelor Nation fans turned on her when they weren’t too pleased with the decisions the feisty Canadian cutie made while searching for her true love. During a drunken date in Ireland, Kaitlyn and controversial player Nick Viall slept together while Kaitlyn had eight other men left in the running. Backlash ensued and soon, she was under attack by viewers, who took to social media to deliver harsh words and even death threats her way. But despite it all, Kaitlyn stands behind her decision. "I’m so fine with people disagreeing with me or having their opinions. That’s OK,” she said during the Men Tell All special.
2. JORDAN PARHAR’S EPIC BLINDSIDE ON BIG BROTHER CANADA
On Big Brother Canada, common sense is threefold. First, never volunteer to be nominated for eviction. Second, never throw the Veto challenge while sitting on the block. And third, don’t be surprised when ignoring instructions one and two leads to a jaw-dropping eviction. Despite claiming the title of Big Brother superfan, Jordan Parhar disregarded the aforementioned advice and got too comfortable in the BBCan house. His monumental mistake and careless game-play not only cost the 21-year-old student his spot in the game, but also led to one of the most shocking blindside evictions ever in the Canadian series. “It was the stupidest move in the history of Big Brother Canada. I’m an idiot,” Parhar told Postmedia Network following his eviction earlier this year. After his ally, Zach Oleynik, was crowned the
HoH, Jordan hastily volunteered to be nominated as a pawn, in order to throw the other houseguests off from any sign of their alliance. But the Newport plan soon plummeted when Sindy with an “S” returned to the house with inside information about their power dynamics and began to orchestrate the duo’s demise.
1. CAITLYN JENNER FILMS TRANSITION ON SEASON ONE OF I AM CAIT
Recently, Glamour named Caitlyn Jenner their Woman of the Year, but it was earlier in 2015 when the reality TV star announced that she was transitioning from a man to a woman and filming the unprecedented experience in a new docuseries. Through the eight honest and insightful episodes of I Am Cait, which aired on E! this past summer, Caitlyn allowed viewers to witness her finding comfort in her true self, while getting more involved in the transgender community and facing her own privilege. Kim and Kanye West, Khloe, Kylie Jenner and even Kris made cameos on the show when they met Caitlyn for the first time, shedding light on how her transition impacted the whole family. Although ratings for the series were less than stellar, I Am Cait’s social impact seemed to resonate with those who tuned in. “I want to help people in my community. We’ve got a long way to go, but at least we got a really, really, really good beginning. And that makes my heart feel good,” she said while closing out season one. I Am Cait has been renewed for a second season on E!
MOST VALUABLE PLAYER: Joe Anglim earned the title of “Golden Boy” during back-to-back runs on Survivor: Worlds Apart and Survivor Cambodia: Second Chance this year.
BIGGEST VILLAIN: Joe Bailey used manipulation tactics on Julia Kinney to earn a rose on Bachelor in Paradise, rubbing reality fans the wrong way.
FAN FAVOURITES: Both Sawyer Fredericks and Jordan Smith were crowned winners of The Voice this year and both vocalists were front-runners from their blind auditions in Season 8 and 9.
BEST ALLIANCE: BBCAN3 winner Sarah Hanlon and comp-threat Brittnee Blair formed the Fembots alliance and ruled Big Brother Canada, despite the odds stacked against them.
